FAQ: Your Placenta Encapsulation Questions Answered

Preparation & Timing

  • To keep your placenta fresh and safe, it’s important to refrigerate it promptly and drop it off within 24 hours of birth. Timely drop-off helps me provide the highest-quality preparation while respecting my family’s schedule.

I process one placenta at a time, so in rare cases, I may request that you freeze your placenta prior to the arranged drop-off. Please reach out as soon as possible after birth so we can coordinate a smooth handoff.

  • I do not include pickup as a standard service. Clients are responsible for refrigerating their placenta immediately after birth and dropping it off within 24 hours.

Optional travel: For an additional fee, I can pick up or deliver your placenta within a 40-mile radius of Monticello.

  • Delivery is available by arrangement and within approximately 40 miles of Monticello, MN for an additional fee. Availability is limited to keep the process manageable and respectful of my family’s time, so advance scheduling is required.

  • Every birth journey is unique. If plans change or challenges arise, please communicate with me as soon as possible. I’m here to support you with clear options and flexibility within the boundaries of this service.

Safety & Support

  • Yes. I follow strict safety and hygiene standards throughout the entire process. Encapsulation is done in a clean, controlled environment using trusted methods to ensure your safety and well-being.

  • Yes, many people who have cesarean births or experience meconium staining can still choose placenta encapsulation. With cesareans, as long as the placenta is handled and stored safely right after birth, it can be encapsulated just like with vaginal births.

Meconium staining (when the baby passes their first stool before birth) is fairly common and doesn’t automatically prevent encapsulation. The key is proper cleaning and preparation to ensure safety and hygiene.

In either case, I take extra care with sanitation and follow strict protocols to make sure your capsules are safe and supportive for your postpartum recovery. If you have any specific concerns about your birth circumstances, I’m happy to discuss them with you directly.

  • Your capsules should be stored in a cool, dry place — away from direct sunlight and heat. A pantry or cupboard works well. When kept in a cool, dark space, capsules can last up to a year. For even longer storage, you can transfer them to a Ziplock bag to freeze them and use them beyond the first year as needed.

  • Placenta encapsulation is generally very safe when prepared with strict hygiene and sanitizing standards. I hold certifications in OSHA Blood-borne Pathogens and Food Handler Safety to ensure your placenta is handled respectfully and cleanly.

The main risks come from improper preparation, such as unsanitary conditions or insufficient dehydration, which can lead to bacterial or fungal contamination. This can affect both you and your breastfeeding baby’s health. Additionally, placentas sent to pathology may carry risks of chemical contamination or mix-ups, so it’s important to discuss any pathology procedures beforehand.

  • Yes, there are some contraindications to keep in mind. Placenta encapsulation is not recommended if your placenta has been chemically preserved, sat at room temperature longer than 5 hours without preservation, or stored in the refrigerator for more than 4 days without freezing.

Other reasons to avoid encapsulation include uterine infections like chorioamnionitis, heavy smoking or drug use during pregnancy, certain rare genetic disorders, and cancer of the placenta (choriocarcinoma).

I always prioritize your safety and encourage open communication so we can determine if this service is right for your unique situation.

Methods & Process

  • I offer the raw method or a basic steaming process without herbs. This approach honors your body’s natural process while keeping the preparation simple and safe. I do not use herbal steaming to keep the service straightforward and respectful of individual preferences.

  • Most placentas yield between 100 to 150 capsules, depending on size. Your capsules come in a labeled glass jar, ready to support your postpartum recovery.

  • Once I receive your placenta, preparation typically takes about 7 days. Occasionally, capsules may be ready sooner depending on my schedule and availability. I’ll notify you as soon as your capsules are ready for pickup or delivery within the agreed-upon radius.

  • I prepare all placenta capsules in my dedicated home workspace, following strict sanitation and safety protocols. The process includes thoroughly cleaning and steaming (Traditional Method) or gently dehydrating (Raw Start Method) the placenta before grinding it into a fine powder and encapsulating it. All surfaces are sanitized before and after preparation, and I use food-grade equipment that is thoroughly disinfected between clients. This ensures your capsules are made in a safe, clean, and respectful environment.

Results & Experiences

  • While research is limited, many families report benefits, including increased energy, a more balanced mood, and support for milk supply. Some also feel it helps their postpartum recovery feel more steady and supported. Everybody is different, so results can vary — but my role is to prepare your placenta with care so you can explore whether it feels right for you.

  • In addition to the most common reports — more energy, stable mood, and milk supply support — many people also share that they notice:

    • Shorter postpartum bleeding or a quicker return to pre-pregnancy hormone balance

    • Improved iron levels (especially if they experienced blood loss during birth)

    • Reduced feelings of anxiety or overwhelm in the early weeks

    • Better sleep quality once their postpartum hormones start to even out

    • A greater sense of emotional steadiness during the adjustment to parenthood

It’s important to frame these gently since experiences vary — placenta encapsulation isn’t a guaranteed “fix,” but rather something some people find helpful as part of a larger postpartum care plan.

  • The placenta contains important hormones like oxytocin, estrogen, and progesterone, which play key roles during pregnancy and birth. After birth, these hormones naturally help your body adjust, supporting uterine healing, mood regulation, and milk production. By encapsulating the placenta, some families hope to gently replenish these hormones to ease the postpartum transition and encourage a smoother recovery.

While research is still growing, many people find this hormone support comforting as they settle into their new rhythms.

    • The placenta is a rich source of powerful hormones that support your body before, during, and after birth. Some key hormones found in the placenta include:

      • Oxytocin: Often called the “love hormone,” it helps with bonding, natural pain relief, and feelings of happiness.

      • Cortisone: Helps release stored energy and supports your body in managing stress.

      • Interferon: Boosts your immune system to protect and heal after birth.

      • Prostaglandins: Acts as a natural anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling and discomfort.

      • Hemoglobin: Supports iron replenishment and healthy blood production.

      • Urokinase Inhibiting Factor and Factor XIII: Work together to reduce bleeding and promote faster healing.

      • Prolactin/HPL: Encourages milk production and healthy breastfeeding.

      • Placental Opioid-Enhancing Factor (POEF): Enhances your body’s natural pain-relief system for comfort.

These hormones contribute to the unique nourishing qualities of the placenta, which is why many families choose encapsulation as part of their postpartum care.
